Eligibility & Getting Started

Who plays in Pride Sports USA leagues?

Everyone age 21 and older is welcome at Pride Sports USA, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, status, height, race, college major, or athletic ability. Our leagues are built around inclusion, not exclusion. If you are interested in playing, meeting people, and having fun, we would love to have you join us. We respect every player's identity and encourage everyone to express themselves in the way that feels right to them.

Do I have to be queer or LGBTQIA+?

No. Pride Sports USA welcomes everyone!

Is there a minimum age to play?

Yes. Players must be at least 21 years old to participate in Pride Sports USA leagues.

Do I need to be athletic?

Not at all. The only requirement is that you are willing to participate. Every sport has rules to learn, and every player brings a different level of experience and a unique set of skills. Nobody is expected to be perfect. Give yourself the time and space to learn, improve, and become more comfortable with the game.

First-time players and people who are new to adult recreational sports are just as welcome as experienced athletes. Our staff will do everything possible to help you get settled. Never be afraid to ask a question — we are always happy to help.

Do I have to try out before joining?

No. Pride Sports USA leagues do not require tryouts. Anyone may register as long as space is still available. Weekly practices are not mandatory. Some cities may offer optional practices or other opportunities to prepare, so check with your local league for availability. Questions about the sport or how the game is played can also be sent to us through our Contact page.

What is Open Play?

Open Play is the easiest way to try Pride Sports USA before joining a league — a casual, no-commitment session where you can meet people, learn the sport, and see what we are about. Sign up at PrideSportsUSA.com/open-play.

Are there different skill levels or divisions?

We always try to offer multiple divisions based on skill level. The number of divisions depends on the size of the program. Larger programs are more likely to have enough teams and players to support separate divisions.

What is the She/They+ division?

We created the She/They+ division as a dedicated, safe space for women, nonbinary, and trans players — members of our community who use she/her and/or they/them pronouns — to play sports, be themselves, and make friends. All other divisions are open to everyone. Check your city's registration page to see which sports offer a She/They+ division.

How are skill levels determined? Does my NAGVA rating carry over?

For rated sports like Volleyball, we use the same skill ladder you will see in national play. If you already have a NAGVA, iPride, or ASANA rating, our converter at PrideSportsUSA.com/myrating shows exactly where you land in our divisions.

Registration, Pricing & Teams

How much does it cost to play?

Most Pride Sports USA programs offer three registration price levels: Early Bird, Regular Registration, and Late Registration. Pricing varies depending on the sport, league, and city. Some programs charge a single registration fee, while others operate on a pay-as-you-go basis. We work to keep our pricing as affordable as possible while providing the greatest possible value and experience for our players.

How do I register?

Pride Sports USA offers registration opportunities throughout the year. During registration, choose the option that best describes how you are joining:

  • Team Captain — choose this option if you want to create and lead your own team.
  • Team Player — choose this option if you already know which team you are joining.
  • Free Agent — choose this option if you are registering by yourself and would like Pride Sports USA to find a team for you.
  • Small Group — choose this option if you want to play with a friend or a few friends but do not have a full team.
Where do I register?

Each Pride Sports USA city has its own registration page. Use the city menu on our website to find your local registration page, or use the registration link provided on the page to select your city and view available programs.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Register as a Small Group if you want to play with a friend or a few friends but do not have a full team.

How are free agents assigned to teams?

Free agents are first placed on existing teams that need additional players. When enough free agents register, Pride Sports USA may also create one or more free-agent teams.

Can I change my registration after signing up (like Free Agent to Small Group)?

Yes — registration changes can be made any time before registration was originally scheduled to close. After registration closes we cannot make changes: teams have been finalized and evened out, and your shirt has already been ordered. To request a change, use our Contact Us page.

When will I receive my team and schedule information?

Team assignments and schedules are usually released four to seven days before the season begins. Information will be shared through the Pride Sports USA app and other league communication channels.

What happens if registration is full?

When registration reaches capacity, we recommend joining the waitlist. You may also reach out through our Contact page to ask whether any additional spots are available.

Games, Schedules & Equipment

Where and when are games played?

Game locations, dates, and times will be available in the Pride Sports USA app. Schedules are typically released close to opening day, so download the app and check it regularly for updates.

Exact game times — including when play starts and when it wraps up each week — depend on your city, your sport, and your team, so your team's schedule is always the real answer. Ask Parker at the top of this page with your sport, city, and team and he will point you to the right place.

Where do I park?

Parking varies by venue, but about 99% of our venues have free lot or street parking. Plan extra time your first week — especially your first time at a new venue — so you know the parking situation for the rest of the season.

Can I bring friends, family, or a partner to watch?

Yes! We always welcome friends, family, and spectators at our games. League play is free for guests. At our national tournaments, some venues charge a small cover for guests depending on the venue — check the event page before you go.

What rules do Pride Sports USA leagues follow?

Pride Sports USA uses its own league-specific rules. Our staff is familiar with these rules and is available to answer questions or explain anything that may be unclear. Our goal is to help you enjoy the experience, understand the game, and continue improving throughout the season. Full rules are available at PrideSportsUSA.com/rules.

What should I wear?

Pride Sports USA provides registered players with a league uniform. The uniform provided by the league must be worn in order to play.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

Pride Sports USA provides the necessary equipment for most sports. Players are responsible for bringing the following personal equipment:

  • Softball — each player must bring their own glove.
  • Pickleball — each player must bring their own paddle.
How long is a typical season?

Most Pride Sports USA seasons run for approximately seven to eight weeks. Depending on the league, a season may be as short as six weeks or as long as ten weeks. The established league schedule generally includes both regular-season games and playoffs. Most leagues schedule one game per week, although certain programs may schedule additional games.

What happens if a game is canceled because of weather?

Unless you receive an email stating otherwise, you should assume that games are still being played as scheduled. Pride Sports USA continually monitors weather conditions and will notify players if a cancellation is necessary.

Substitutes & Attendance

What is a sub?

A sub is a player who is not signed up for the current season, filling in for one week when your team is short on players. You and your team are responsible for finding your own subs - the league does not keep a waitlist.

A sub can never be someone who plays on another team in the league — every sub must be a player who is not registered anywhere in the league this season. That rule is about fairness: teams should never be able to raise their skill level for a week by borrowing the best players from other rosters.

What does a sub have to do before playing?

Three things, every time:

  • Sign up - the sub creates an account and registers as a sub for that week at PrideSportsSubs.com.
  • Pay the $15 weekly sub fee - the team usually pays the sub back, but the fee must be paid before they play.
  • Wear a plain black t-shirt with no logos.

As captain, you are responsible for making sure your sub is signed up and paid before game time. Captain tip: keep a few spare black t-shirts in different sizes in your bag for last-minute subs who show up without one.

How many subs can we use? (the weekly max, explained)

Every sport has a weekly max - the most players your team can have on a given week, counting rostered players and subs together. Subs only top you up to that number, never past it.

The rules:

  • Count your rostered players who are there that week. At or above the weekly max? No subs allowed.
  • Short players? Add subs only up to the weekly max - never over it.
  • You must always have at least one rostered player there to play.
  • No players from other teams - a sub can never be someone who plays on another team in the league.
  • Kickball and Dodgeball only: never more than 4 subs total, even if that still leaves you under 12.

Example - Pickleball (weekly max: 3)

  • 2 rostered players show up → you may add 1 sub (total 3).
  • 1 rostered player shows up → you may add 2 subs (total 3).
  • 2 rostered players + 2 subs (total 4) → not allowed - that is over the max.
  • 3 or more rostered players show up → no subs.

Example - Kickball (weekly max: 12, plus the 4-sub cap)

  • 7 rostered players show up → max 4 subs (total 11 - the 4-sub cap kicks in before you reach 12).
  • 10 rostered players show up → max 2 subs (total 12).
  • 12 or more rostered players show up → no subs.

Weekly max by sport (rostered players + subs combined):

  • Basketball 4’s - 6
  • Basketball 5’s - 7
  • Billiards - 3
  • Bocce - 4
  • Bowling - 5
  • Cornhole - 3
  • Dodgeball - 12 (max 4 subs)
  • Kickball - 12 (max 4 subs)
  • Pickleball - 3
  • Softball - 12
  • Tennis - 3
  • Volleyball 4’s - 5
  • Volleyball 5’s - 6
  • Volleyball 6’s - 7
When are subs never allowed?

No subs in playoff games, no subs in REMIX seasons, and a sub can never be a player from another team in the league.

Is there a grace period if we are short players?

No - games start on time. If your team does not have the minimum number of players at the scheduled start time, the game is a forfeit.

What happens if I have to miss a game?

We understand that life happens. When you know that you will miss a game, notify your team captain as far in advance as possible. This gives the captain time to arrange for an eligible substitute when necessary.

A player may miss up to two games without notifying the captain, or up to three games when the captain has been notified. If a player exceeds either attendance limit, the captain may remove that player from the league without a refund.

What do we do if our team can't make a game?

Let us know right away through our Contact page, and include four things in your message: your sport, your city, your team name, and what's going on. That gives league staff everything needed to notify your opponent and handle the game.

The earlier you reach out, the better - an advance heads-up is always treated more kindly than a no-show. How a missed game is recorded is covered in your sport's rulebook in our rules library.

Communication & Support

How will the league communicate with me?

Pride Sports USA communicates with players through email, text messages, and the Pride Sports USA app. Make sure your contact information is correct and that notifications are enabled so you do not miss important league updates.

Is there a captains handbook?

Yes! The official Captains Handbook covers everything about creating and leading a team. You will find it in our rules library at PrideSportsUSA.com/rules/captains-handbook. The Substitutes & Attendance section of this FAQ is also worth a captain's bookmark.

Who are the staff in my city?

Every Pride Sports USA city has its own local staff — the people who run your leagues, events, and game nights. You will meet them on your city's page: pick your city on the Find Your City page and scroll to the Staff section for photos, roles, and ways to reach them. Tell Parker (at the top of this page) which city you are in and he will hand you the direct link.

Who should I contact if I have a question?

Reach out through our Contact page for assistance. The form asks for your city and sport so your question can be directed to the appropriate Pride Sports USA staff member.

League Policies

What is the Pride Sports USA league removal policy?

Any player who behaves in an unsportsmanlike, violent, aggressive, or dangerous manner will be removed from the league without a refund. This includes dangerous behavior caused by impairment from alcohol or drugs. Pride Sports USA reserves the right to remove any player, at any time, for any reason. This policy applies to conduct at league games as well as all Pride Sports USA–sponsored events.

A player who misses more than two games without reporting the absences, or more than three games in total — whether excused or unexcused — may be replaced by their teammates, team, or league. Any replacement or removal will be made at the league's discretion and will not include a refund.

What is the refund policy?

All Pride Sports USA registrations are final. Once registration has been completed, the player is no longer eligible to receive a refund. Please carefully consider your availability and commitment before registering. Refund exceptions will not be provided.
